One Day in Lacrosse

Recently, my husband and I visited the small towns of Onalaska and Lacrosse, Wisconsin. We came to town without hotel accommodations, driving around to find a place situated between everywhere we needed to be. Why wouldn't you choose the hotel with a giant moose at the front door? The Stoney Creek Hotel had cozy lodge vibes and a north woods aesthetic. It’s a place where time slows down to a meditative mosey. Guests curl up in an over-stuffed chairs next to a fire lit inside the large stone hearth. They open a bottle of wine and play tic-tac-toe to pass the time. Hmmm, maybe that would be us later. First order of business was to check-in at the high school to watch show choir competition we went there to support.

In between performances, we popped into antique stores, farm stores and thrift shops. This particular farm store had flower seeds for days and we picked up a few packets for the cut flower garden we plant this spring. Also of note, their Goodwill thrift shop is arranged like an TJ Maxx store, likely took over a closed location.

Anytime we travel somewhere new I do a search for current and past James Beard Award nominated and winning restaurants. It’s a guaranteed great meal. We found one on this trip. Slipping into seats at the bar of the James Beard nominated, Love Child we had an incredible dinner with cocktails. If you find yourself up north, stop in and order Butter-Washed Old Fashioned made with brown-butter washed whiskey, turbinado, and angostura bitters. Thank me later.
